1. Objective

 There was a time when every resume began with an objective statement. Today, these subjective statements are little more than fluffing that steal space from compelling content.

The vast majority of objectives say nothing. It is rare that an objective statement will help you, so it is usually best to take it out. Not to mention, it’s generally quite hard to write a good objective statement. After all, you are telling the company what you are looking for, when in fact; the firm isn’t there to help you achieve your goals.

2. Series of Short-Lived Jobs

If you had a series of jobs that you have held for short periods of time, it might be a good idea to take them out. You don’t want your resume looking disjointed and you don’t want employers to think you don’t have focus.

Some exceptions can be if you worked somewhere really prestigious that would make you look like a better job candidate or if you had a long period of unemployment and had nothing else to put in your resume. Still, even in those circumstances, be very cautious about what you include.

3. Personal Information

While you do need to include a certain amount of personal information to ensure that a technology recruiter contacts you, it is unprofessional to list a current business phone number or email address on your resume. Avoid confusing the recruiter with multiple phone numbers. List either your home number or cell phone, but make sure the voice mail greeting sounds professional. Personal email addresses should be nondescript and include your first and last name.

While you may think that including links to social media sites makes you appear young and hip, your LinkedIn profile is the only SM site that should be referenced on an IT professional’s resume. Details such as your current salary and future goals are topics that should be reserved for an in-person interview.

4. Information You Cannot Defend in an Interview

It goes without saying that outright lies should never be included on your resume, but over-embellishment also gets you in trouble. Even if your creative writing manages to land you an interview, employers find out quickly enough if you are not as capable as you have claimed. Being “familiar” with a software package or specific platform does not translate into you being able to create and manipulate detailed documents or complete complex projects.

You never want to be in a position where you are unable to demonstrate one of the “skills” listed on your resume. If you always remember to be honest and put your best foot forward, your employer becomes a valued reference in the future.

5. Photos

These may not be on your resume, but once a potential employer has your full name they might as well be. Polish all social networking profiles and remove any unprofessional or embarrassing photos.

Unless requested or depending on the industry, leave your photo out. You are not being judged on how you look, so including a photo will make you look unprofessional. If you are gray or balding, you might consider removing your photo during your job search.

6. Any Information That Can Cause Discrimination

Don’t mention anything like religion, social issues, or politics on your resume unless it’s relevant to the company you are applying to or if it reflects a strength that will add value to the job position. Readers of your resume may be able to glean that information through the affiliations and organizations you belong to, so be careful about what you put down.

Most of the time, it’s best to keep it neutral. Of course, you may not even want to work for an organization that doesn’t share your beliefs, so leaving this information in is up to your discretion.

7. Personal Interests

Personal interests should never appear on a resume. In other words, hiring managers shouldn’t care if you like cooking, fishing, basketball, sewing, or any other hobby. A resume should include work-related content, not personal content.

8. Basic Skills and Obvious Information

Unless a job description specifically mentions basic skills like typing, email, and so on, you shouldn’t include them on your resume. Furthermore, leave out obvious information that steals space from important information.

For example, the commonly used statement telling hiring managers that references are available upon request is obvious and unnecessary.

9. Long-winded Descriptions

Remember, hiring managers are very busy and typically have stacks of resumes to review when they have a job to fill. They won’t read through long paragraphs of text describing your experience, so keep your content short and sweet.

Use bullet points and action words. Don’t include subjective assessments of your work. Instead, show hiring managers what you have done with quantifiable examples that demonstrate your abilities.

10. Mistakes

This might seem like an obvious thing to omit from your resume, but the number of resumes hiring managers look at on a daily basis that include mistakes is very high. Review your resume for spelling, grammar, and formatting mistakes, and then review it again.

Use spell check. Read it backwards, and read it out loud. Take a break and read it again. Furthermore, you should never rely solely on proofreading your own work because you won’t catch all of the errors. With that in mind, be sure to give your resume to at least three other people to review, too.

Warm Up

If in case you have reached before the scheduled interview time make the most use of it by just warming up yourself with simple ways like warm your hands, either under hot water or under a hand dryer.  Whether you get through your job or not, but this psychological trick will keep you in the right mindset from the start and calm your nerves and help you focus.

Mirror Their Movements

Want the job? Then you’ve got to be likeable and one way you could possibly do that is by mirroring your interviewer. But remember, while mirroring is often subconscious, you can certainly control it by paying attention to how your interviewer’s nonverbals, especially his/her body language and tone of voice. But keep it very subtle, otherwise it might backfire.

Take Your Time

You might feel compelled to answer each question right away, but don’t be afraid to take a few seconds to collect your thoughts because that is what will keep your hunt for the job alive.  By taking time to answer, it not only will let your answers sound more articulate, but you’ll sound more confident to your interviewer. In addition it also makes the interviewer think that you might be the right prospect.

Watch Your Body Language

Cracking your knuckles or playing with your pen, can cost you a dear and give the wrong impression to your interviewer. So at any cost you need to keep track of your body language which is crucial for nailing your next job interview.

“This gives off the vibe that you’re closing in on yourself and not willing to understand,” exclaimed Melinda Edwards. She further adds that, “Similarly, don’t fidget too much, This makes the interviewer uncomfortable, because they see how restless you are.”

Bond with Your Interviewer

One of the most interesting and crucial aspect is bonding with the Interviewer. Finding common ground with your interviewer creates a personal connection that makes you more memorable and likeable.

The best possible way to do it is by giving subtly compliments to interviewer on the questions he asks, or on some aspect of their personality. Moreover, try to find something that will bond you, such as commenting on pictures of his family, or sports teams.

Dramatic behavior

Stay calm and move on.

When you were told that your services are no longer needed, don’t panic and show your inner feelings out. You must be angry, irritated, frustrated, you want to shout out loud, but take a deep breath and be cool.

Screaming won’t do any good and better stay calm and say a proper goodbye to your teammates and colleagues and leave a proper remembrance rather than the odd behavior at the last moment.

Taking revenge

The common mode of revenge upon your company is to damage or take away the office property. Don’t ever do this out of frustration. Just think about your reputation you build up with your consistent hard work.

The idea of damaging or stealing will leave you without any positive feedbacks and references, and in the worst case you might land up in jail in offence of tarnishing and stealing things/data, which does not belong to you.

Keep up your working spirit

The hard part is working with same high spirit during the last days of office. You already served your notice period and few more days left for you to leave the office, will make you lazy towards working in office.

But, don’t do this and be a professional and avoid this mistake and help your teammates the way you did earlier and make them feel happy before you leave. People will remember you for your great working spirit and contributions.

Plan a smooth transition

Leaving the office with your unfinished task left behind will leave you with a bad reputation. Be a professional and discuss your projects which have to be transferred to other people or team.

Sit down, make them understand, give them a presentation and make them aware of the project and the needful to be done.

You will gain a respectable position even when you leave with your organized transfer of your projects and unfinished task. Communicate the plan and progress with everyone concerned in person and on e-mail.

Forgetting proper transfer

Data and equipments belonging to the office have to be respectfully returned back. These do not belong to you, so please be courteous enough to hand it back before you leave.

All the data and equipments has to be returned back and get a clearance certificate from the office or related teammates, accounts, HR. Upload a copy of the certificates to your personal e-mail ID before you submit the clearance to your supervisor and HR.

Pending claims

Get all your claims settled before you make an exit from the office. Get your hard earned money before you leave as after you are gone from office, recovery of money or any important documents will be difficult.

Sign off in advance on the date and amount of your full and final settlement making sure that you get the dues cleared and every matter is settled well.

Criticism

Though whatever hard times you had in the office control your emotions and don’t offer criticism to the employers during the last days of your working in the office.

During the exit interview make sure you don’t make the matter worse for your teammates, and do not show your anger there and pour in criticism.

This can lead to branding, as a person who did not speak up while at work and now taking up a stand. Discuss only what worked for you and what was good about your team.

Breaking the PF

Eating away your PF is not a good idea during the course of changing jobs. Even though you feel you can be running out of cash soon with no job in hand, don’t break the PF.

It is meant to be your saving and should be kept aside until you retire; or if you plan to reinvest the amount in an asset like property.

Breaking the Provident Fund account too soon can hamper your savings and future plans. Find ways of curtailing your expenses until your cash flow stabilizes.

Discussing your future Job

Sharing things with your colleagues is ok but getting too cozy can lead you to faraway land filled with troubles. Make your exit from the past office smooth and keep you future job a secret until you join.

Your future plans should all be yours, do not talk about it. Discussing these things can make other people in the office restless and may be jealous of you getting a better opportunity and if for some or the other reason, the new job does not work out you will be embarrassed.

Bitching about the employer

Be careful as you speak against your employer. Catching up with your teammates over a glass of drink or cup of coffee is superb, and tempting enough to vent out your anger or frustration over issues in office.

Don’t do it, because what if the criticism gets too high proving fatal for you both currently and in future. Be careful what you say, as words travel faster than anything. It is best to focus on your desire for better growth opportunity rather than indulging yourself in petty troublesome talks.

Exaggerating CV

Show what you really are and don’t over exaggerate things.

Take extra effort to mould up your CV well, but avoid extra things and roles. Be exact and to the point. While describing your present responsibilities and achievements include what you really do and indulged yourself in projects.

Be careful as a false mention of things can cause you your future job and tarnish your reputation for long. Most employers will run a third-party verification check. Do not exaggerate and reveal things until you are fixed upon anything.

Keeping a grudge

Being in office for a long time lets you mingle with various people in the office and in turn you make sweet and bitter relationships in office premises. As you work with dedication in your final days at office, leave all the bitterness behind and leave behind a positive energy and cool relationships and energizing conversations.

Follow the happy path of forgiving and gift yourself a piece of peaceful mind and walk away into your new role with positivity and happiness keeping the contacts from the past office intact.
